While working on Google Docs, sometimes you have a limitation of the word count or characters in your document. Then, you can find the count of the words and characters using the tools tab.

Steps to Count Words Using Menu Bar
The steps below show you the number of words or characters in Google Docs.
- First, open the file or document where you want to count the words.
- In the menu bar, click Tools and select the Word Count from the list of options.
- After that, the word count dialog box appears with the count of pages, words, characters, and characters excluding spaces.
- Click Ok or Cancel to close the window.
Interestingly, you can also count the words and characters on a page with or without spaces in the selected paragraphs.
Word Count Using Keyboard Shortcut
Another method to check word count is using the keyboard shortcut.
- To count words, open the file in Google Docs.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + C (for Computer) and Command + Shift +C (for Mac users).
Display Word Count while Typing
Keeping track of words while typing in Google Docs is quite easy now with the following steps.
- First, go to Tools and select Word Count from the menu.
- Click on the Display word count while typing in the word count box.
- Once you select this, click Ok to apply.
- Next, you will see the word count displayed in the document’s bottom left corner.
- When you click the drop-down arrow, it will show all the categories, including the number of pages, words, and characters count, with and without spaces.
- Click on any other option from the drop-down which you want to display on the bottom box.
- In the end, you can also hide the word count box by selecting the hide count option.
