How to do Superscript and Subscript in Google Docs

In Google Docs, you can insert superscripts and subscripts using the format menu and the keyboard shortcut. The Superscript character or number appears above the main line of the text, while the subscript can show the number slightly lower than the text line.

Insert Superscript using the Format Tab

Follow the below steps to make your text superscript in Google Docs.

  1. First, select the text you want to convert into superscript or place the cursor where you would like to add the superscript text.

  3. In the format drop-down, hover over to the Text and click Superscript.

Insert Subscript in Google Docs

Using the main menu, you can add the subscript to one character or a whole paragraph line to change its formatting. Here are the steps to do this.

  1. Highlight the text you want to change into the subscript from Google Docs.

  3. Go to the Text from the drop-down and select Subscript.

Keyboard Shortcut to Add Superscript and Subscript

The keyboard shortcut is another method to apply superscript and subscript format to your text.

  1. Select the particular character or text you want to switch into the subscript or superscript format.
  2. Then, for Superscript, press Ctrl +. (Control and period key).
  3. For Subscript, press Ctrl +, (Control and comma).

If you are a Mac user, press the Command and period key to create superscripts, and for subscripts, use the Command and comma.

Superscript and Subscript using Special Characters

You can also use the special characters feature in Google Docs to add the superscript and subscript.

  1. Position the cursor where you want to add a special character (Superscript and Subscript).

  3. In the special character box, type superscript or subscript in the search box, and you will find the list of options on the left- side of the dialog box.
