How to do Superscript and Subscript in Google Docs

In Google Docs, you can insert superscripts and subscripts using the format menu and the keyboard shortcut. The Superscript character or number appears above the main line of the text, while the subscript can show the number slightly lower than the text line.

In this tutorial, we will look at the several methods to add superscripts and subscripts.

Insert Superscript using the Format Tab

Follow the below steps to make your text superscript in Google Docs.

  1. First, select the text you want to convert into superscript or place the cursor where you would like to add the superscript text.
  2. After that, go to the Format tab from the above menu bar.
  3. In the format drop-down, hover over to the Text and click Superscript.
  4. Now, you will see the selected text has changed to the superscript format.

Using the main menu, you can add the subscript to one character or a whole paragraph line to change its formatting. Here are the steps to do this.

  1. Highlight the text you want to change into the subscript from Google Docs.
  2. Next, click Format from the menu.
  3. Go to the Text from the drop-down and select Subscript.
  4. Finally, your highlighted text will convert into a subscript format.

You can also use the special characters feature in Google Docs to add the superscript and subscript.

  1. Position the cursor where you want to add a special character (Superscript and Subscript).
  2. Afterward, click Insert on the menu and hover over to the Special Characters.
  3. In the special character box, type superscript or subscript in the search box, and you will find the list of options on the left- side of the dialog box.
