Line and Paragraph Spacing in Google Docs

In Google Docs, you can change the space between the lines of your whole document as you have various line spacing options like a single line, 1.5, 1.15, and double. In the same way, you can also add or remove the after or before paragraph spacing from the main toolbar.

In this tutorial, we will look at quick steps to change the line and paragraph spacing. 

What is Line Spacing?

Line spacing measures the space between the lines of the text in the paragraph. And you can set the single space, 1.5 line spacing, double spacing, or the default space to 1.15.

Steps to Change Line Spacing

You can change the line spacing by the following steps.

  1. First, open the new or existing Google Docs document.
  2. After that, select the text you want to adjust for spacing.

  3. Now, click on the line spacing button from the above formatting tab.
  4. And select the spacing from the below drop-down options.
  5. In the snapshot below, we have changed the spacing to 1.5, and you can see the change in the space between the selected text below.

When you select the double-spacing option, you can see the paragraph you have selected will transform into double-spaced text.

What is Paragraph Spacing?

With this paragraph spacing option, you can add space after and before the paragraphs. Also, it helps you to give the proper spacing to the document, which makes it easier to understand.

Steps to Add Paragraph Spacing

  1. Once again, you need to select the paragraph where you want to adjust the space.

  2. Now, click the line and paragraph spacing button drop-down in the toolbar.
  3. Then, select any option either add space before a paragraph or add space after a paragraph.

  4. You can see the below snapshot with adding space before the paragraph.

  5. And you can do the same for adding space after paragraph to the selected text.

You can also remove space using the same steps once you specify space before and after the paragraph.

Change Custom Spacing

You can set your own line and paragraph spacing together in the Custom spacing.

  1. First, select the paragraph or all the text in Google Docs.
  2. After this, go to the line and paragraph spacing and select the custom spacing from the list of options.

  3. The dialog box appears once you click on the custom spacing.

  4. You can change the default line spacing and before and after paragraph spacing.

  5. In the end, click apply to see the change in the spacing of the text.

Using Format Tab

You can also access all the above options from the Format tab.

  1. First, you need to select the paragraph where you want to add space between the lines and after or before.
  2. Then, go to the Format tab and click the line and paragraph spacing drop-down.
