In Google Docs, the outline feature represents the index on the document’s left-hand side. It includes the headings, subheadings, or titles which help you to organize your lengthy documents.
In this tutorial, we will learn to show and close the document outline along with the steps to add and remove the heading from the outline.
Heading to the Text
Before following the outlining steps, you need to give the title, subtitles, or heading to the text in the document. As in the below screen, you can see it displays on a left-side panel.
Steps to Add Outline to the Text
- First, click on the View option of the menu bar.
- After that, it will show you the drop-down list, and then click on the Show document outline.
- And now, this will show you an outline text on the left side panel.
- The leftwards arrow (←)at the top of the left side will only appear when you mark out the Show document option from the View option.
Closing the Outline
It is quite easy to disable the document outline from the left side.
- Drag the cursor to the left arrow and click on it to close the document outline.
- While to enable the document outline again, just click on the back arrow. Then all the headings will appear so you can see the outlined text.
Interestingly: It is like a shortcut to enable/disable the outline text.
Remove the Heading from the Outline
The most amazing fact is that you can also remove any of the headings if you don’t need them anymore. To do this, place your cursor before the heading that you want to remove from the outline. Then, click on the cross to remove it.
Re-adding the Heading to Outline
If you want to re-add the deleted heading to the Outline document bar, then use the steps below.
First, you need to select the heading and press the right button of your mouse and then click on the last option, Add Document Outline, to re-add it to the outline heading list.
In the end, you can see that your complete outline text is on the left panel again.
