In Google Docs, you might need to insert the line number as it is quite helpful to count the number of lines in your document. But make sure it is only possible to add a line number when you start working on a new document.
In this tutorial, we will look at the two different methods to insert line numbers into the document.
Insert Line Numbers using a Bulleted List
Sometimes, you need to add line numbers to give a sequence to your ideas or points in the document. Here are the steps to insert it.
- Open the blank document.
- Then, click on the Numbered List in the above toolbar to activate the numbering line.
- Once you click on it, you will notice that the number 1 has appeared on the document.
- Next, type the text that is whatever you want to add.
- Press the enter key, and you will see a new line starting with the number 2.
- When you press the enter key, you will add the following number to the list.
Note: The above method of inserting line numbers only works when you start with a new document rather than the existing one.
Keyboard Shortcut
The keyboard shortcut to insert line number is by pressing the Ctrl + Shift + 7.
Adding Line Numbers using Table
Another method uses the table function to insert line numbers into the document. The following are the steps to do this.
- Click on the Insert tab, then hover over the Table.
- Then, in the table templates window, select the 3×3 table.
- After that, the table appears on the document with three rows and three columns of the same size.
- And now, you need to make your first column smaller by dragging the first column line.
- Here, you have space in the first column to add numbers. Then, you can add whatever text you want in the second and third columns.
- You can also add more lines and numbers to the table. For this, you need to drag your cursor in front of the row and then click on the “+” icon.
Point to Remember: In this table method, you need to add the line number by yourself in each line.
